Career
Cole completed his postgraduate medical training at the University of Missouri, in the field of internal medicine. He has dedicated his practice solely to the field of hair transplant surgery since 1990. Cole was among the first thirty physicians to become a Diplomat of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. There, he served on the Board of Directors and the examination committee.
The Cole Isolation Technique
After reading about the successes Dr. Ray Woods, of Australia, had with Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Cole began creating his own technique for FUE in 2001. Originally known as the Follicular Isolation Technique (FIT), he gradually refined his method until it evolved into the Cole Isolation Technique (CIT). In addition to his proprietary technique, Cole developed a line of instrumentation to be used with CIT. The development of the Cole Isolation Technique meant that patients could undergo hair replacement surgery via a minimally invasive procedure that left no visible linear strip scar.
Inventions
Cole has invented numerous instruments to improve the speed and efficiency of hair restoration surgery. He has developed various tools, designed for use with his CIT hair transplant method, which are used to harvest the donor region and to prepare the recipient sites. Other instruments Dr. Cole has created include:
- Counting Incision Device (CID): an automated disposable tool which allows the physician to accurately maintain the incision count during recipient site preparation.
- Self-Filling Injection Device: a device which allows a physician to accurately deliver a dosage of tumescent anesthesia or saline to a patient from an IV bag. This tool eliminates the need for multiple syringes and needles and reduces the risk of an accidental needle stick.
- The Hypothermopro: a system, when used in conjunction with the proper storage medium, which provides a more stable environment for the storage of grafts and the dissection of grafts prior to re-implantation.
- Assist to Hairline Design (AHD): a tool used to assist in the design of the hair line during hair transplant procedures.
- Graft Processing Boar: a reusable graft slivering and cutting board.
Sanctions and discipline
Cole was fined $20,000 by the Medical Board of Georgia in 2010 for "participation in the unauthorised practice of medicine" and disciplined by the Medical Board of California, Department of Consumer Affairs in 2011 for "failure to properly run his practice."
